Produced by Luke Plumb, Soon I Will Sing You a Song is an optimistic and joyous singalong, a tall tree growing in deep, dark soil.
In the winter of 2022, I had committed myself to writing one song per week in an attempt to sing my way out of - or through - a very difficult time. Like anyone, I wanted to move out of the deep-dark and into the light.
I had written five songs filled with caves and shadows, midnight oceans and burning mountains. I didn't play them to anyone and could not have imagined ever wanting to do so.
Soon I Will Sing You a Song was written in the sixth week. It was the week my beloved grandmother passed away. I wrote a song for her funeral and was touched by how deeply it moved people. They seemed surprised that a song could do that.
On the long road home, I began to wonder if I might one day share my music with people in a way that could help them to feel and heal.
I tested positive for Covid that evening and, bedridden and self-isolating in our front room, started writing this song. I couldn't actually sing it because the virus had transformed my voice into a pile of lowdown dirty gravel, but I wrote a confident falsetto melody in the hope that one day I would get my voice back.
Outside my window, our cherry tree was still clinging to the bright red memories of Autumn. Just like me, I thought. Time to let go of my leaves...
I did not know it at the time, but this song was part of what would gradually reveal itself to be a song cycle, a collection of songs designed to be sung in a certain order. In time this song cycle would become my new record.
So, here it is: The song and the moment I'd dreamed of; a tall tree growing in deep dark soil. Sing along!
lyrics
Long summer days have long passed away
Cherry tree, weep. Let go of your leaves
My soul is heavy from sighing
Falling leaves seem to be flying
Floating in space
Though I'm sowing in sorrow, it won't be long
Soon I will sing you a song
Something inside doesn't feel right
You lay your hands upon me
Not who I wanted to be
Though I'm sowing in sorrow, it won't be long
Soon I will sing you a song
Soon I will sing you a song
Though I'll see you tomorrow, it don't feel wrong
Soon I will sing you a song
Soon I will sing you a song
Fall
Float in space
Fall
Float in space
Moon in a cloud
Snow on the mountain
Eye in the sky tonight
Cold as a satellite
Isolation
Just like everyone
Long winter nights lock me inside
And that cherry tree stands like a hand reaching up to the sky
Black holes and planets and silence
Falling stars seem to be flying
Floating in space
Though I'm sowing in sorrow, it won't be long
Soon I will sing you a song
Soon I will sing you a song
Though I'll see you tomorrow, it don't feel wrong
Soon I will sing you a song
Soon I will sing you a song
Fall
Float in space
Fall
Float in space
